The grape of Troia is an old and distinctive grape of north central Apulia it is grown near Barletta, in the north of the Bari province, as well as in a town near the province of Foggia. The origins of the Troia grape are linked with Diomede the great hero of Troia.
Who as legend has it sailed the Adriatic at the end of the Trojan War, during his journey he discovered the mouth of the Ofanto River. He went up the river and stopped and made a home for himself and his men. He used the stones from the city of Troy to mark the borders of his new found territory, and so was born Camp Diomedei.
While transporting the great stones to build the new city walls, Diomedei also brought with him branches, which he planted on the banks of the Ofanto River. These plants are the ancestors of the magnificent vine that has led to the production of the prestigious grapes of Troia we know today.
